Boswell has developed a reputation as a unique designer with emphasis on the details, flawless construction, and courses that have straightforward maintenance.
Bill Boswell was born in Augusta, Georgia, two blocks from the Augusta National Golf Club. Bill Boswell developed an early passion for the game going to the Masters Tournament at a young age, studying the Augusta National Course as well as classic golf course books on architecture – Mackenzie, Simpson, and Ross. Wanting to design golf courses, he obtained a degree in Architecture from Clemson University, tailoring his design degree to include turfgrass, surveying, and other classes geared toward golf course design. Boswell started his design career in 1984 working for Robert Trent Jones Sr. in Europe. A major golf boom was in full swing and during those seven years, Trent Jones had up to 12 projects under construc tion at one time, completing 26 all together. While in Europe, Boswell also took many trips to Scotland studying the classic golf courses – Especially St. Andrews. The golf boom ended when the Gulf War started and Jones closed his European office. Boswell then designed the Santo Da Serra Golf Course on Madeira Island, Portugal, living next to the site and directing the daily construction. After completing Madeira, he returned to the States to join the firm of golf course architect Dr. Michael Hurdzan for three years, designing three courses. Boswell returned South in 1995. While working with Superintendent Bill Womac during a remodeling project, a close working relationship developed. “Womac is a stickler for details, especially during construction” Boswell insists. Bill Womac has over 30 years experience with premier clubs in the Atlanta area and is a valuable consultant. From his experience designing courses throughout Europe on a vast variety of sites, working “hands on” with shapers, and knowledge gained from Dr. Hurdzan and Bill Womac of turfgrass and modern construction techniques Boswell formed Boswell Golf Design, Inc. in 1997.
